Charles Brongniart and his Meganeura

Charles Jules Edmée Brongniart was born in 1859 in Paris as the grandson of the famous paleo botanist Adolphe Brongniart. He first studied Literature and Natural Sciences and became a doctor in 1894. His Dissertation was on fossil Insect and got an award from the Academie des Sciences. He was an expert on Insects from the cole mine of Commentry. It was there that in the 1880s a large dragonfly from the Carboniferous was unearthed. The magnificent animal that reached a wingspan of almost 70 cm was names Meganeura by Brongniart referring to the large veins on its wings.
