10th installment of the series - Rapunzel
When and Where?
Rapunzel was a real challenge because the movie really can’t be dated to any specific time period – it is the only Disney movie that I believe was set in no specific time period. I know the concept art was from an 18th century painting, but to be honest nothing in the movie matches the 18th century. Well maybe the architecture, then again the clothing looks medieval for some characters, Tudor-Style for others and some are dresses like barbarians or ancient Germans, the guards however are dressed like mid-19th century cavalry. So I needed a way to combine all these elements… adding the fact that the story was of German origin I had an Idea. I call it: What 19th century Germans imagined early Germans in medieval epics looked like.
Commentary
So the outfit of Rapunzel here was inspired by several 19th century illustration especially from operas be Richard Wagner. Additionally I was thinking about the 19th Century German art movement of Romanticism which had a strong tie to the middle ages.
Cassandra sees this and thinks to herself “I’m falling in love…”
