So finally my Stone Age girl has a name. I drew a picture of her using a spear thrower some time ago, and since then she has appeared in both my Stone Age - Stereotype vs Reality drawing as well as the Stone Age 101 series. So I thought I should give her a name: Kya. The name is an homage to the abbreviation for “kilo years ago” that is used in prehistoric archeology to specify age.
Kya is a character from my Time-Travel Science Fiction story – that I am actually writing, Episode 1 is already finished (and turned out a lot longer than planned).
Since she will appear quite late on in the story I have not yet written too much about her personality or role in the narrative. This is what I have so far:
She is a native of Doggerland from around 35.000 BP (or 35kya ) and the chief tool maker of her tribe. She is very skilled with various materials and known for her artistic skill and inventiveness. While she is obviously highly intelligent (even by modern standards) she never speaks and within the story it remains unknown whether she can’t speak or does not want to. She has the habit of making small animal figures for people she cares about. When threatened she is more defensive than offensive and often chooses to hide or run rather than fight. She is very agile and a master of stealth. However she does know how to use a spear thrower and shows great skill with it too. Her favorite animal seems to be the wholly mammoth; since that is the animal she most often carves statues of or draws on everything she has space to draw on (also her spear thrower is shaped like a mammoth).
And this is also the second time ever that I drew a landscape, so hooray for that! Although I suspect Doggerland would have been even flatter than this. The color palette was inspired by this painting meinonline.at/public/ynblog/14…
The prompt goes like so;
"Write about characters living before Homo sapiens evolved or during a time when humans existed simultaneously with the species they evolved from."
Can't really do the latter but the former works fine. Maybe it involves a pair of Homo erectus sitting by a fire while another species watches them from the shadows.
Maybe I am going to add an episode that is set around the settlement of Bilzingsleben, but I am not sure about that yet
At one time I tried to make a spear thrower. Although it did not fly well…
Kya is a lovely girl!
Yes, I made one myself as well (actually I posed with it as a reference for this picture) and two days ago I testes it on an archery range - 40 m seems to be my top reach with it, amazing for such a simple weapon
Yes, As you know best, the spear thrower was the very important the life-tool for hunting with the Sling. It was the powerful way to fly spears, that is longer than one’s height, in ancient times. In my case, it not timing or the ability, because I have held a mechanical pencil and cats, all the time.
Your researches are very great and I admire them. It is warm and cheerful!
The story and this character sounds great too, actually I have a char named Kya/Kia in one of my fan fictions.... heheh still she sounds interesting and the rarely talking pun is a good pick for her, I mean its mostly the big muscled barbarian male sidekicks, whom have not much to say. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nug1kg… XD
I cannot wait to read the story when its finally out!
I myself am also almost done with the first piece of content I wanna start my story with, plus I have already mad my new account for it.
BTW right now for how much would you do a commission similar to this piece, one character with full background?
Thank you - Kya seems to be a popular name (I think two characters in the Avatar Universe are named so too).
Yes thats true - the big silent guys
I am still working on establishing a culture/religion for my paleolithic humans (I already got one for the neolithic people and I am very happy with how that one turned out )
Yes, I will wait until I have a few Episodes ready and then I will try to figure out how to upload them best (in pieces or all at once???) But I am very glad you are looking forward to them
Ah, awesome, be sure to tell me when I can read your story!
As for the background commission, right now I need a little more practice with backgrounds... I will experiment a little with them and then after I have a little more experience I will add them to the commission menu
Yeah it seems so... actually my Kya is also in an Avatar Fan-fiction XD
Indeed, so its really fun to see another take on it.
Hnm... well I'm pretty sure you should somehow connect the two, with also considering how culture and religion got to be by the beginning of Historical times... Although yet another interesting take could be, all the different tribes sharing one advanced religion believing in One God and then showing, mentioning, theorizing about it, how early human politics, self interests and so on corrupted religion and made it a secular tool of separation and self interest of the powerful.
I would think and recommend to have have a steady and consistent flow of content, if your goal is to have it shared with as many people as possible.
I will for sure! Don't worry for that!
Well you know XD I wouldn't even mind to have a/be an experimental piece.
Ah, yes I thought so
Yes, I still have to think of something like that for my Paleolithic setting, all I know is I want to avoid the old "fertility great mother goddess colors of the wind" stuff - not because it is implausible, just because I find it clicheed.... As for my neolithic religion, it wont really have a god.
That is a good Idea... I will start gathering episodes
Ok - I will let you know when I am ready for more backgrounds
Yes that is obviously overused and better not to us, I'm pretty sure there were loads of other cultures believing in different thing then mother nature... what is if you check a fairly new thing.
Pleas do so!
Btw the shooting for the Maria Theresa film is over now, you can see a few shots of the filming: www.hirado.hu/2017/06/27/befej…
What are your plans for the summer? Will you perhaps travel to Canada for a dig this summer too?
Lastly, last week I have been to the Zoo here at Budapest and to my surprise I have seen many mostly girls provably from the arts faculty of a uni there sketching and drawing the different animals and for some reason that has made me feel greet, reminding me of the old times, when ships took artsits on their journey around the world to document the new animals and other finds... thinking about it it feels more human then just taking pictures and that is great, it again should be a thing combining science with art.
That movie looks really interesting, when will it be comming out?
I will be in Florida next week on a paleontological field trip. We will be visiting seagrass meadows and coral reefs and so on
Ah, yes that is why I always take my sketch book on excavation and make old fashioned drawings of fossils in it
