Description

I decided to draw a second girl from the kingdom of Noricum wearing traditional clothing. (and this time I tried making her look a little more central- rather than nothern-european)

Noricum was a celtic kingdom that existed since the 3rd century BC in what is today Austria and Slovenia. The Norici where well known for their skill in metal work and also had a rich source of iron, gold and salt. That made them ideal trade partners for the roman republic and "ferrum noricum" would become porverbial for good quality steel. The relationship of Noricum and Rome stayed friedly and King Voccio even send troop to support Julius Caesar in 49 BC. However the wealth also made Noricum a target for invading germans and the romans that where called to help where beaten at the battle of Noreia - one of the worst roman defeats.
The transformation into a roman province went over peacefully with many Norici recieving roman citizenship right away.
However tombstones prove that especially woman held on to traditional celtic names and dress. Depicted here is what this traditional dress looked like according to depictions and archaeological findings.www.replik-shop.de/images/prod…
Most characteristic is the belt. Another important part of Norici fashion was the headdress known as a noric cap that can be seen here www.ubi-erat-lupa.org/img/monu… I did not depict that here though.
